Dreaming Bigger in the Woodshop
When Michael Kannisto joined the Flint team as a Program Services Job Coach, the woodshop was busy with small projects like picture frames. While these were great for practice, Michael saw an opportunity for the group to dream bigger. He noticed that the people working in the woodshop weren’t fully utilizing their potential, with only individual, small-scale tasks. To foster a deeper sense of collaboration, he proposed a bigger challenge: building a bookshelf.
The process was inclusive from the very beginning. Moving beyond a simple woodworking project, the team focused on creating a purposeful design that addressed the real-world needs of their peers. Recognizing that many people in the program are wheelchair users, they decided to design and build an ADA-compliant shelf that was fully accessible. Michael led the way by involving the team in every decision, from the initial project plans to the final finishes. He ensured that everyone, regardless of their physical or cognitive ability level or previous experience, had a meaningful task. In the end, the project was less about the shelf itself and more about the team’s shared mission to build something functional that honored everyone’s right to live well and move freely.
The Strength of the Team
This collaborative shift sparked a visible change in the shop’s energy, as the group moved from individual tasks to a shared sense of purpose. As the project neared completion, a new sense of self-confidence radiated through the shop. Soon, more people began stopping by the woodshop to ask how they could help. The environment evolved into a hub of teamwork. There was room for everyone, whether they were able to assist with handling the heavier machinery, painting, or sanding. The success of the bookshelf immediately set a new tone for the program, inspiring more people to step forward and ask how they could contribute to the team’s next big idea: an inclusive dining table.
A Leadership Style Founded on Inclusion
Michael’s philosophy is simple: “I’m not in charge. I’m just a team leader.” He focuses on meeting people exactly where they are and helping them build on their existing strengths. By challenging each person involved with their own responsibilities—like being “in charge” of a specific segment of a build—he helps them foster a sense of ownership and pride.
This inclusive approach creates a powerful sense of community. Those involved learn the vital skills of communication and cooperation required to be a successful team member. Every day, they can see physical progress on their projects, which serves as a constant source of motivation.
Creating a Lasting Impact
There is a unique joy in seeing a project move from a sketch to a functional piece of the community. After the success of their accessible dining table, the team is now hard at work on a mid-century modern coffee bar intended for the program’s entrance. They lean into this style because it allows them to produce professional-grade work while building essential teamwork skills. As this new coffee station nears completion, it stands as a testament to what is possible when we provide the right tools and support for individuals to live their best lives.
