Shifting Gears: Raymond’s Drive Toward Independence

By Sevita

Before his stroke, Raymond Estrada was always on the move. Whether helping customers, admiring classic cars, spending time with his wife, two stepsons, and four energetic dogs, or trying new recipes from his favorite cooking shows, he lived an active, full life. His stroke changed everything—but not his determination.

Upon admission, Raymond faced a long road. Following his stroke and other complex health challenges, Raymond relied on a mechanical lift for mobility and needed maximum assistance with even the simplest daily tasks. However, Raymond approached his rehabilitation with the same focus he would use while navigating a complex video game or following a detailed recipe from his favorite cooking shows.

His progress at NeuroRestorative was marked by impressive wins in mobility and strength. Raymond worked tirelessly with his therapy team to move from total dependence to self-propelling his wheelchair over 300 feet. But his most significant milestone was rising from his chair to ambulate 145 feet with a rolling walker, a massive leap from his initial evaluation.

By discharge, Raymond had replaced the mechanical lift with a sliding board and required only minimal assistance for safe transfers—milestones that once felt impossible.

Raymond’s story isn’t just about physical recovery. It’s about a man determined to get back into the driver’s seat of his own life. Today, Raymond is back home with his family and beloved dogs while continuing his recovery through NeuroRestorative’s day treatment program. His next goals are returning to work, getting back behind the wheel, and reclaiming the independence he fought so hard to earn. HIs journey is a testament to what’s possible when determination meets the right support.
