From Everyday Items to Extraordinary Art
In Novi, MI, our vocational team proves that with teamwork, any barrier can be broken. This year, people we serve transformed simple plastic spoons into delicate, hand-blown “glass” centerpieces for the Brain Injury Association’s Spring Tribute Legacy Dinner. Using heat guns and UV resin, the team created over 100 unique pieces of art, showcasing the power of collaboration. As Vocational Supervisor Brittany Matthews, CBSI, says, “When a piece is made in-house from beginning to end, that is the true value of working as a team.”
Beyond these special projects, the Novi facility offers a variety of opportunities,
including:
- A woodshop and ceramics studio: For creative expression and tactile skill-building.
- Fresh Food Fridays: Where individuals plan, cook, and serve fresh meals.
- Community Business partnerships: Engaging in inventory management and car part organization for local businesses.

Building Strength and Accessibility
In Flint, MI, the vocational program is “dreaming bigger” in the woodshop. Under the guidance of Job Coach Michael Kannisto, the team shifted from small individual crafts to large-scale, collaborative furniture projects. Their first major accomplishment was a custom, ADA-compliant bookshelf designed for wheelchair users.
By assigning each individual ownership of a different stage of the project, the program the program fosters a deep sense of pride and community. The Flint team has since moved on to creating:
- An Inclusive dining table: Designed to create welcoming spaces where everyone can gather together.
- A Mid-century modern coffee bar: Building professional-grade furniture while honing communication and cooperation skills.
