Benjamin Shahabi-Azad, MD, attended medical school at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas, TX. Dr. Shahabi then stayed in Dallas to complete his internship and residency in the field of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation at UT Southwestern Medical Center, which included extensive training at Clements University Hospital, Parkland Hospital, Veterans Affairs North Texas Medical Center, and Children’s Medical Center, amongst other hospitals as well.
His internship focused on working within the inpatient setting, predominantly in non-surgical and surgical services; Internal Medicine, Acute Stroke, Neurocritical Care, Emergency Medicine, Trauma Surgery, Burn Surgery, and Neuroradiology. During residency, Dr. Shahabi received comprehensive training in various settings. He spent extensive time working in Acute Inpatient Rehabilitation, which included units dedicated to Spinal Cord Injury, Traumatic Brain Injury, Stroke, Medically Complex/Neuromuscular Disease, and General Rehabilitation units.
Dr. Shahabi spent additional time obtaining various certifications to focus on community health and quality improvement. He is certified by the Duke University Health System for developing health programs, Institute for Healthcare Improvement & National Patient Safety Foundation for healthcare improvement, American Spinal Injury Association for pressure injuries, spasticity management, and Autonomic Dysreflexia, as well as the Center for Disease Control and Public Health for concussion training. Additionally, Dr. Shahabi has several research publications with an emphasis on looking at pre-admission risk factors for acute transfers back to acute care during inpatient rehabilitation and the design of an Autonomic Dysreflexia protocol for Spinal Cord Injury patients.
Dr. Shahabi is currently a Board Certified Physiatrist and Board Certified in Brain Injury Medicine by the American Board of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation. He serves as Co-Medical Director and Laboratory Director of other Acute Inpatient Rehabilitation facilities in El Paso, TX.
